“Our experience with Andrew Mares from Elkhorn Electric was five stars from start to finish!
We had a light post made of wood that was rotting out of the ground, and our options were to either ditch it or upgrade. Because we used it for holidays and loved tying a balloon to it for the kid’s birthdays, we decided to redo it with a brick post.
Now something they don’t tell you about building a brick light post is that it’s insanely expensive and stressful, but Andrew made sure that the electricity part went as smooth as possible. To start, I unknowingly bought a post light which didn’t include the mount needed for the stone cap of the post that I bought. I also got a tapered cap (slants diagonal up instead of flat) because I liked the look of it, but the masons did not let me know that it might be difficult to mount a light to a tapered cap and it was something that never crossed my mind. Andrew explained all of this to us and let us know that he would have to reschedule us so that he could get the appropriate parts to make our light work on our post.
Naturally I fretted about this all week. Was it going to have a pole sticking up? Was it going to be able to mount flush? Why hadn’t the masons warned me about a tapered post? My husband assured me that Andrew did not seem concerned, so I shouldn’t be, either. Sure enough when he arrived he was able to get the light put in no problem, looking amazing, and he added an electrical panel to the back for us, which we had originally requested, so that we have an additional power source for all of our Halloween/Christmas decorations we like to do (if you can’t tell from the photos, ha). If that looks slightly off center in the photos it is because the masons cut it that way, versus anything Andrew did.
We also incurred NO additional cost for him to have to get a different mount for us, come back a second time, and the additional work it took for him to mount the post light versus mount light. He said “What we quote is what you pay”, which is the opposite experience I had with the brick part of the post (as the final bill ran $1k over the quoted price). I also called my cousin, who is an electrician, with our original quote from Andrew to make sure it was fair and he said “I would have charged you more”.
All of that to say that Andrew was so easy to work with and did such an exceptional job, it was the easiest and most pleasant part of the post being built. And the work is amazing and looks fantastic. My husband is already talking about having him come out to install outlets throughout the yard to make decorating easier, as well as discussing putting some lights in on our porch overhang. We would ABSOLUTELY recommend Elkhorn and look forward to working with them again!”
“Had issue with 8.5 yr old Trane thermostat not controlling 8.5 yr old Trane furnace. Have thermostat set at 68 degrees and thermostat “inside temp” display said it was currently only 62 degrees in the house, so it would take 6-10 hours for temperature to rise to the 68 set point temperature, the furnace running the entire time. This has been an issue since the furnace was installed and the installation company (another Trane dealer) checked the system a few times and could find no problem. We knew the house temp was much warmer than the thermostat “inside temp” was displaying, so today I used a precision meat thermometer to check the temperature at the thermostat and it read 78 degrees in the house, not the 62 degrees as shown on the thermostat “inside temp” display. I thought maybe we had a faulty thermostat and decided to contact Elkhorn. I spoke to Kimberly and she arranged for a technician to arrive 2 hours later. After explaining the issue to the technician, Mike, he diagnosed the problem within 10 minutes. The problem all along has been the cavity in the wall behind where the thermostat is mounted has a cold draft coming up between the studs and the hole in the wall behind the thermostat mounting plate (for the thermostat wiring to come thru) was allowing the cold air to constantly contact the thermostat temperature sensor, telling the thermostat set point sensor to keep the furnace running. Mike placed insulation in the wall cavity and also covered the opening behind the mounting plate with insulation tape to prevent any cavity air from affecting the thermostat temperature sensing bulb. Within 10 minutes, the thermostat “inside temp” reading rose to 78 degrees, matching Mike’s hand held temperature gauge that he uses to compare actual readings. So the problem was resolved very quickly and efficiently. Elkhorn has certainly gained our trust for future HVAC annual maintenance and any other HVAC needs. Thanks again to Kimberly and Mike for the quick response, diagnosis, and professional service!”
“2026 UPDATE: I just wanted to give another shout out to this amazing company. They continue to provide the best service out there at an incredibly reasonable price. I cannot recommend them enough and will continue to run all my electrical, HVAC, and plumbing through them. Most recently we have had a struggle with our hot tub circuit breaking at the panel. I have spent the past three years working with them to try and figure it out (they have been amazing as well) and they have put in new parts and tried to help figure it out. The one item that we wanted to check was the electrical connection and circuit breaker. So, I called Elkhorn to see if they could help find anything. It had been 3.5 years since we had the new panel installed and I had not expectations on warranty or anything if it was found to be faulty. But, ANDREW came out to the house and checked everything: he checked all connections in the panel, he checked all connections in the tub, and he said even though it appeared the circuit breaker was solid, he thought that may be the only place to make a change. Again, no expectations, but he went ahead and replaced the circuit breaker for the tub and got the charges for all services removed. WOW! This was amazing and ANDREW was absolutely fantastic, professional, personable, and exceptional. Again, this is the the company to use for all your home services they cover. Cannot recommend enough and so grateful for Andrew coming to help again. Thanks Elkhorn!!!
We absolutely love Elkhorn and always have the best service. Today Bryan Lefever and Alex helped with our furnace tune up but also found some other things that needed to be handled. We did one of those things to avoid a potentially disastrous event with our water heater and while he did that he saw our dryer vent was not connected correctly and fixed it without question or charge. Can’t say enough about these guys overall and we’ve used them for electrical, plumbing, and HVAC. But Bryan and Alex were top notch!”
